RB5009UG+S+IN availability

Tue Oct 25, 2022 6:57 pm

Any news on the availability of the RB5009UG+S+IN? I pre-ordered it through Dustin (European reseller) in June. It says it has yet to receive any units and don’t have any details on future availability.

I see that the RB5009UG+S+IN is sold out everywhere with expected delivery dates of next summer or later, in the online stores that publicly list an expected delivery date.

Was this hardware configuration an unexpected success? or does it contain some impossible-to-obtain supply-constrained hardware components?

I just called my dealer, and after waiting 7 months, got delayed to February 2023...

Not sure what to do, the only thing left is to get 4011 with wifi chipset. Even plain 4011 is not available.

I was just called by a supplier that RB4011 entered his stock, but depends on where you live. Europe? Go for it!

He was actually excusing himself for the lack of 5009s by presenting this. In the mean time I got my hands on a CCR2004 while waiting for either version of RB5009.

Without an official statement or insider knowledge, your guess is as good as any regarding future availability. The chip shortage isn't over and is still causing problems for many very large manufacturers in every sector. There's also a war going on. Marvell isn't the largest player, but they are still a big player behind the 5G deployment, and the surge in demand for connected everything's since the pandemic is probably not helping supply either.

The local supplier where I purchased my gear from seems to have completely dropped the brand. If something dies, I will probably have to switch to something else. Using what you can find seems like the wisest route for now. 2023 is around the corner...

I am looking everywhere. Found some locations around the globe, but TBH I doubt any of them actually have the thing on stock, regardless of online status.

As for alternatives, I could either aim for:

CCR2004-16G-2S+PC
or
CCR1009-7G-1C-1S+PC

However, I wouldn't really bet on the availability. Have to check though...

For RB5009, we were able to get our hands on some rb5009upr+s+in. We do not need the PoE, but better than nothing.
We also had to bite the bullet and buy some expensive Cisco boxes, because CCR2216 is available nowhere with unknown date of restocking.

We still have global chip shortage. My employer is struggling seriously to get Ethernet switch chips and embedded SoCs. Lead times were 50 (!) weeks when we ordered them, and then got pushed out for another 25 weeks. You probably read about car manufactures having tho shut down whole assembly lines for weeks because of lack of chips used in various automotive control units. At the other hands we have chip brokers offering us chips with a normal prize of 12$ for more than 100$...

This is especially hard for smaller companies like MikroTik, because if distributors/manufacturers do not have enough chips to fulfill purchase framework agreements, they prefer the large volume customers. Which MikroTik is not.
So as inconvenient the constant push outs of MT availabilities are, they just forward the regularly push outs they get from their chip distributors/manufacturers. There is not much they can do about but waiting for better times.

I just got info from distributor:

CCR1009-7G-1C-1S+PC - not available at at all
CCR2004-16G-2S+PC - February at the earliest

What I don't understand is how is it possible that the supply circus issue lasts this long. I mean, how it is possible that there are no chips? Deliveries should really be a non-issue as the chips are small and light and one container of the stuff is enough for a long time.

I have a friend here who is importing electronic goods from China, and while there are some delays, he gets his stuff more or less regularly.

A friend joked that I could get a new car faster than a MikroTik routers. Heck, I could buy a Tesla and get it before 5009 router.

With all components in it ?
Plenty of tesla on parking lots with parts missing.

Where I live 1 year for a new car with personal config.

Ok, now compare that with a pre-built router. No options, etc. Two pieces of metal, one cast and one sheet, two sets of LAN terminals, an USB, SFP, and some other connectors, plus a printed board with some chips on it.

The complexity between the two is dramatic.

I might be able to get one 2004 model, altho it is more than double the price of 5009. And I really liked that 5009.

Always funny when some random guys know things better. The shortage affects especially "simple" chips. Like small uCs, voltage controllers and similar.
To give you an example:
My employer is waiting for 30'000 simple micro controllers (normally 2$/pcs). We ordered them in January 2022, for 7$/pcs.
Initial shipping date was August 2022. Than it was moved to March 2023. Today, it was moved to August 2023.
The affected product is much simpler than a RB5009. But without the micro controller, it cannot be built.

Here some insights by the head of jabil procurement (a large chinese contract manufacturer)
https://www.jabil.com/blog/global-chip-shortages.html
Citation from the above link:
As of summer 2022, lead times for most semiconductors — no matter the type — are running at least 40 to 50 weeks, with many in the 50 to 60-week range.

@jbl42 - I am ranting... But it is two+ years now. From my perspective that is enough to fix the supply chain. I will read the article, hopefully it will shine some light on the issue.

@chechito - I think I will have to go that route myself. The unfortunate part is that the planning is not months, but now a year ahead, and in that period a lot can happen. And if a project drops, what then? It is not fun to get stuck with bich of high-level stuff that you can't reuse that easily.

I work in electonics R&D in medium sized company. Shortage is not over, it's very compicated issue. All I can say that since covid, my main job has been trying to find alternative parts, selecting what ever MCU is available and porting code to keep production alive. Now new trend is that older industry standard parts are being obsoleted in rapid fashion. Component MFGs are freeing up production lines for something more profitable.

You mean in general, or as a result of shortage?

As for my 5009, I managed to get on a waiting list. A friend form another co told me that they will be getting 10 pieces next month. Fingers crossed.

The one is the logical result from the other.
Simple economics.
If your short in supply, see in which end-product those goods are being used which bring the highest margins. Sell those.

Yes I get that, but the thing is that *everything* is more expensive now. Simple ICs are often several times more expensive than before (someone up commented exactly that), so I don't really see much sense in changing production when you earn well with anything.

If a producer has possibility to change product produced, they will consider changing product ... they will compare costs associated with change to potential higher revenue ... and will select combination which will bring them highest net result. It doesn't matter if current product portfolio is a profitable one, higher profits are better. And higher product prices mean higher margins which in turn mean that the change is even more likely.

Nobody cares about poor souls using mikrotik gear if we suffer because of "profit optimization process" outcome.

OK, so after a year of waiting I managed to get (pay for now) for my 5009...

My distributor told me again MT prolonged delivery to April, and another distributor just rung me and told me they have one for me :o)

The first one will return the deposit, and I paid to the second one. And of course it was more expensive, but what can I do?

So I guess in a day or two the saga would be completed.
