WinBox v3.37 released!

Tue Jul 19, 2022 12:39 pm

What's new in v3.37:

*) do not update interface window layout all the time;
*) do not send value for empty multi-option field;
*) fixed VPLS "cisco-id" field with "&" prefix (introduced v3.36);
*) fixed ability to set options that can be hidden;
*) fixed floating point field's negative value in -0.*** format;

If you experience version related issues, then please report them to support@mikrotik.com.

Both Winbox 32-bit and 64-bit versions are available here:
https://www.mikrotik.com/download

Winbox 3.36 on 6.48.6 can not save wireless settings, like data rates, tx-power, tx-power mode, etc. on mibsbe (i do not check others)
On CLI work correctly as expected, and the changes are reflected on winbox
Now work as expected, thanks.

Would love to see less resources used when open "interface list" on something big and slow like crs354. It takes up to 40% of switch cpu just to refresh that list. Not doing any real job. A bit annoying.

This makes clear that CRS354 should have had ARM cpu, not MIPSBE one ...

Agreed.

CRS317 and CRS326-24G-2S+ were in the right path.... and then they decided in CRS5XX to... reuse the pithy qca9531? WTH
That kinda scares-me, as the slightest mishap/misconfig that lets the tinyest ammount of traffic leak into the management vlan will crap out the CPU

However the cpu load been lower on v6. So I bet there is a room for the software improvement too.

Use this as model:
https : // download.mikrotik.com/winbox/<VERSION>/winbox<ARCH>.exe
where <VERSION> is 3.xx and <ARCH> can be for 32 bit nothing and for 64 ... 64 !

It does work if you remove the spaces from the conceptual model rextended provided.
I was able to download 3.34 32-bit without problems.

not talking about the link to download old version, that work
i'm talking about making the app auto upgrade to last version when you ask for< when I press check for update the "change log" blank and does not do nothing...

Ok, maybe one more time.
upgrade.mikrotik.com is an alias for download.mikrotik.com.
download.mikrotik.com has address 159.148.172.226
download.mikrotik.com has address 159.148.147.204
download.mikrotik.com has IPv6 address 2a02:610:7501:4000::226
download.mikrotik.com has IPv6 address 2a02:610:7501:1000::204
159.148.172.226 and 2a02:610:7501:4000::226 are broken.
159.148.147.204 and 2a02:610:7501:1000::204 work fine.
Either wait for MikroTik to fix the broken server or define those records locally without the currently broken one.

this mentioned and resolved in several places on the forum. please use the search bar before asking questions.

one example (literally what Rextended said): viewtopic.php?p=813908

I keep a txt file on my laptop with the following so I can remember how to get older versions if I need to....sometimes I come across an ancient device that has not been updated for years and it needs an older version of winbox to connect to it.
change version number in url for what is needed
https://download.mikrotik.com/winbox/3.25/winbox.exe

really old versions will be here instead
http://download2.mikrotik.com/routeros/ ... winbox.exe

You just ended up on the working server, that's all.
.226 and ::226 are still not working.
HTTP replies are different too.
the broken .226 responds with:
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Server: nginx/1.18.0
and the working .204 responds with:
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Server: ThirdWorldFileDaemon

Got bugs only view .

How to produce :
* When access mikrotik, using Winbox head to IP>FIREWALL then tab RAW.
* As example I have 72 RAW rules (info bottom left interface 72 items). But the winbox gui when we scroll down only have max around 50% of it. As fo my case show around 35 36 items only.
* Try close the IP>FIREWALL window and try open it again.
* All 72 RAW rules will be shown.
Note : If we close the winbox, the bug will be happen again.

Not important but somehow annoying. The bug itself I think have occurred since Winbox 3.35
Hope dev can look for it. TYVM.
#Last update, after update to v7.7stable, this bug dont happen anymore.

Same bug with rb5009. The bug happened since prev version (3.36 ?) and still exists in 3.37.
Actually u dont need to close and open again, just resize the window, all the rules come back.
I guess it is winbox UI bug.

Please in a next release change the format of the files used by winbox (.cdb, .viw) from binary to some human-readable format like JSON or XML.
As a transition mechanism, Winbox would still be able to read binary files but would write them in the new format (new extension). When reading, it reads the new format when available.

Is MFA on the roadmap for WinBox?

Our cybersecurity is requiring MFA on all the network stack for management.
Put your management in a separate VLAN or at least a separate IP range and you can use a VPN as a second factor.
Whatever you do, NEVER open the Winbox port to access from the general internet! That is unsafe even when MFA would be in place. ALWAYS use some VPN or list of allowed source addresses!

Agree.
When you're arriving at Winbox, you already passed the front door.

As of now, the .226 server is back in business serving winbox upgrade requests.

Winbox 64 bit, v3.37 (but already v3.35, v3.31) does not list the disks under System/Disks.
There are no disks in the dropdown list for 'Format Drive'
Happens on ROS 6.46.8 (hEX and hEX PoE) On some routers it works, on others it does not. (Same router type, same WinBox version and same ROS version)

Terminal "disk print" is always OK. Webfig is always OK.
Older Winbox v3.29 is sometimes also OK. (e.g. For ROS 4.47.10), but that is yet another hEX PoE.
Pffff hard to test, as some work others not, is it version or device specific?

Current workaround: don't trust System/Disks in WinBox, even for v3.37

Already tried to clean the Winbox folder on your machine ? Best to copy it aside, in case you still need info from there.

Removed 6.46.8 directory in ...\AppData\Roaming\Mikrotik\Winbox

New descriptors downloaded .... no change (this is normally common for all my hEX on 6.46.8 , some work some don't)

Removed that 'IPaddress'.viw from ..\AppData\Roaming\Mikrotik\Winbox\sessions . No change in behavior

This situation is the reason for my request viewtopic.php?p=948630#p948630 above (#40).
When there is some subtle corruption in a winbox file, at least give us the possibility to look at it and maybe fix it without throwing away everything!

I confirm, but I'm curious why you want move that column, just for find a bug?
It was an accident :) I wanted to move another column - so just a random find.

IP/Kid Control/Devices: why is the traffic shown in bytes? Please make it show in gigabytes or at least megabytes.

Why. It would be hard to handle in external programs if this changes. In Splunk dashboard "MikroTik Device Traffic" that uses Kid Control, I can set the scale that would be useful to see on the graph.

In general it could be a useful feature in winbox to have some selectable output format for fields.
E.g. I would like a date field to be shown in YYYY-MM-DD format, no month names or "optimization" for "today".
Similar to the above request to show bytecounts in larger units.

For the view part in WinBox, It could be Ok that select scale, as long as original data are used behind.
Time format are a big mess in RouterOS/Winbox. It should use a standard format and not different type depending on where you look and if its some hour back or days back,

Kid control is a feature clearly intended for home usage.. whatever your need is to export this data to something like splunk.
The raw data could still be counted / exported in bytes, this topic is about winbox, it'd be easy to convert it to reasonable values and just display it in megabytes/gigabytes in WINBOX.

Identified such a problem:

1. Go to the list of users, select any user.
2. Click on the user and in the window that appears on the right, select the "Password" command and change the password, this is where the bug will be:
a) if you change the password and click "OK" - everything will be fine,
but
b) if you change the password (enter a new password and confirmation and click "Apply" there") and then just click the "OK" button - there will be an error.
And although nothing changes, such a glitch is very unpleasant. This did not happen before, you often change the password via Apply, and then OK.

Winbox 3.37, ROS 6.49.6 (checked, the problem is on two different computers and on two different routers).
(sorry for terribal English)

Beyond the bug, which do not happen on 6.48.6, it has always bothered me to see colleagues who first click on Apply and then immediately on OK...
I have always found it useless and a waste of time.

The "bug" occurs on 6.49.x
For the developers:
The bug occurs because the "Apply" button exists.
When clicking on "Apply" the password is changed.
By subsequently clicking on OK, in previous versions the password was changed once again.
On RouterOS 6.49.x has been set the check that the password is not the same as the previous one.
So when you click on "OK", the system tries again to change the password, ignoring if it has already done "Apply"
and then rightly gives error because it is the same as the password just set by "Apply".

Solution: Remove the "Apply" button.

Why not just make it "operator proof"? Either using "apply", "apply+OK", "just OK" should work as expected.

Not all worlds of experience are equal. I have many other systems where just OK would not change anything.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... d25e761c0d
"No, they are different.

"Apply" puts into effect the change you made.

"OK" puts into effect the change you made and closes the dialog.

But note that that last sentence, about "OK," is the way it's
supposed to work; it's generally true, but it's not 100%. There's an
occasional exception to that and in such a dialog, "OK" just closes
the dialog and doesn't apply the change. So if you're not sure, it's
safest to first click "Apply," and then "OK."

Remove "Apply" remove any doubt...
The change are applied on "OK" and the window are closed instantly.
(one click, without useless click)

or

Remove "OK" remove any doubt...
The change are applied on "Apply" and the window is closed after pressing the "X" window button.
(same numbers of click)

In the "quick setting of password" (System->Password) window there are "Password" and "Cancel" buttons. Not very intuitive.
Indeed in the Password... window under User entries there is OK, Cancel and Apply.
- it should be made consistent between these windows
- an Apply button is only useful in windows that have a lot of info, that you sometimes may want to set in increments or want to do/undo.
- it is not relevant (for this case) what bugs may exist in Microsoft software.

Is that enoying missing screen update back in Winbox Terminal? Has been solved in an earlier release. Seems to be back.
Scrolling in the Terminal Window corrupts the display (pixels are moved to the wrong place). Happens with WinBox 3.35 and 3.37, both 64 bit.
Happens with ROS 7.5 on hAP ac3 and ROS 6.49.6 on hAP ac2. So it is WinBox related ???
Klembord-2.jpg

Pressing "shift" refreshes the screen, all bits OK again, untill you scroll.

I don't know how old this is or if it's recently introduced, but it's annoying: if the last opened tab on any interface is one of "General, Ethernet, Loop Protect" and you open an interface and you switch to any of these tabs: Overall Stats, Rx Stats, Tx Stats, Status, Traffic you can't use ESC to close that window anymore.
If the last opened tab is one of those last ones mentioned (*Stats, Status, Traffic) and you switch to any other tab, ESC works fine.
The behaviour is the same on other interface types too, not just Ethernet.
Weird little bug.
LE: I've tested with 3.15, same thing. So it's an old one.

I would like to request that the output of the saved manage routers file be encrypted so you cant just open the .cbd file in notepad and see all the saved credentials in plain text, even having a master password before outputting the file would be better than it is now.
I know that work stations are supposed to be locked down etc but I feel that this is a major security risk and do not suggest using the managed routers feature in winbox before this is fixed :)

yeah forgot about that option but its still not enough to protect yourself. just looked and you dont need to even save the file for an addresses.cdb file to be make, look at C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Mikrotik\Winbox as it uses this for your manage logins anyways.

Things like this should in my opinion be handled on OS level, not application.

Use Bitlocker and a separate USB key.
When your PC get stolen or compromised, nobody can access that data without the key.

@AidanAus: Yes, there's default %APPDATA%\Mikrotik\Winbox\Addresses.cdb and it's initially unencrypted and everything in it is readable (it's a bit of binary mess, so not exactly user friendly, but not secure either). Once you set master password, the file gets immediatelly encrypted. And based on quick test, even when you move it using File->Save As..., it will save the encrypted version (if you didn't set master password, then it saves readable version; in other words, it keeps source format). It seems to me that your wish was already granted, just set the password.

@holvoetn: It depends. If it's handled by OS, you have to trust the OS maybe a bit more than you want to. You may also want to just move the file elsewhere, either as backup, or send it to someone (with password sent using some other secure channel), etc. So independent protection is not bad either. Only if you have more things like this, it's annoying to have to enter too many passwords.

In NDP/neighbor list there are a lots of ways to interact with a entry, ping, telnet, mac telnet and so on but why isn't there a winbox option? (open a winbox session against selected entry).
It could try to connect using same login as current connection or if the address is found in winbox saved/managed list it can use that instead.

Feature Request: commandline connection to RoMON to see its RoMON Neighbors

something like

winbox.exe --romon <ip> <user> "<passwd>"

should result in showing the RoMON neighbours of <ip> from where further connections could be made.

Very useful as tool in The Dude...

Or maybe something like "RoMON" underneath "new WinBox" to connect to RoMON of the current session if RoMON is enabled?

Thank you.

I've been struggling with this too - in the end, I've used directory junction to redirect the %APPDATA%\Mikrotik to an encrypted VeraCrypt drive (which is represented by one big file, used also for storing the web browser cache and other potentially sensitive data). So far, seems like the best solution for me - for the machines, where the whole sysdrive is not encrypted by BitLocker or similar

This is normally not an issue because usually on Windows 10 systems the %APPDATA% directory is encrypted by Bitlocker even when the entire system drive is not.

Re: WinBox v3.37 released!

Wed Dec 28, 2022 3:46 pm

I've just noticed that winbox is showing me only the first 68 rows of /ip/firewall/mangle on opening.
As soon as I select some subchain (other than 'all') and get back to 'all', it shows me all the lines (106 rows).
Yes, I'm using session templates but even of I select a new one ('own' new one) it shows me only 68 rows.
Using 'none' as session, it shows 69 rows, I'm a little bit confused.
Also switching to other tab (filter, nat) and then getting back to mangle, it seems to fix the rows number issue.
Anyone noticed a similar behaviour or am I just getting mad ? :-)

What RouterOS version are you running?
Is that only for mangle rules? I do not have that many so I cannot quickly test, but I have 246 filter rules (the first tab) and they are all loaded.
(I usually select a chain filter to limit the amount of screen update processing)

Winbox is the latest 3.37, RouterOS is 7.7rc3 .
I'm pretty sure the issue was also present on previous 7.7rcX, but I suspect it was not there on 7.6 but I could be wrong and I need to find a way to check.
I don't remember seeing that on the filter tab, in mangle it's consistent every time I open a new connection and I display the mangle tab (first time).
I've just did a new check and also the NAT tab suffers the same issue (truncated at line 34 of 50 rows), switching the focus to mangle and back to nat and all rows are displayed.
The filter tab seems to be unaffected.
It's just a cosmetic thing, but it's annoying.

Ok but is it a prerequisite to have RouterOS v7? I manage several routers with very complex firewall setups but they are all running v6.49 (due to broken BGP in v7) and there I see no such issue.
My test routers running v7 have shorter firewalls, but I could experiment with one (load up a long dummy list of rules).

In practice, I play around with RouterOS v.7 only in my Lab (just few rare exceptions where I can't help myself).

Thanks @rumahnetmks for confirming the issue (I see you wrote it was present since winbox 3.35).

There are some cases where inexplicable Winbox behavior is caused by a corrupt session file.
You can try to make a connection with a new session file and check if it still occurs.
(this is the .viw file in the roaming profile directory)

Feature request: make filters work (as much as possible within the limitations of the API) on the router side, rather than on the winbox side.
E.g. when I show IP->Routes with filter "Active is yes", send the query with "?active=true" to the router, rather than fetching all routes and showing only those that are active.

In my case the issue of not seeing all data from firewall tables (in my case it's not limited to specific tab), when using Ros v7.x (I'm now on v7.7), is that on sections where there are lot of rows, Winbox does not show the lateral scrolling bar once I open a tab.
But if I switch to another tab and then come back to the other I wanted to see, then scroll bar is there and I can see all lines.
I have it with firewall/raw, but also address-list an so on with firewall menu.
It does not happen to me with /ip/route, even though the list is long enough. It appears more on the /ip/firewall that is multi-tab window and can get long even when opened in full screen.

I don't think I can reproduce that. But maybe I don't have enough rows, the correct RouterOS version, and/or I misunderstand the problem.
In any case, when you have such a problem, always try to connect without a session file to see if it can be reproduced with no- or fresh session file.

Re: WinBox v3.37 released!

I have just tried again, but I get the same issue.
So I have connected to the router by setting winbox's session to "none" (I guess it's what you have asked to try), but when I open /ip/firewall/raw I don't see scrolling bars, until when I switch to another tab and come back.
Same behaviour as when I use session.
However if I use session, and I exit winbox by pointing the same menu/tab where scrolling bar disappears, once I reconnect through winbox within the same session, this time when firewall/raw is opened I have scrolling bar and can see all rows.
So as long as I exit winbox leaving the affected menu/tab selected, next time I re-open it, scrolling bars are there, otherwise if I start from another menu sequence, once I re-connect and I go into that menu/tab, no more scrolling bar until when I cycle to another tab and come back to the same menu/tab.
