Do you need a US certified LTE product to get functionality on American LTE bands?

With all of Mikrotik's LTE routers, sometimes I see a skus meant for the US, my question is, do the international not function in the US? or is this some sort of regulatory nonsense?
EDIT: After Consulting this Wikipedia page, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellular_ ... ted_States, and the product pages of various Mikrotik LTE products it seems that it should work, but with fewer bands available, this should translate to slower speeds since fewer bands are available for carrier aggregation. (The INTL models do support some American frequency bands, but less of them)
